So I finished a story in high school right? Well I had high hopes of getting it published and never did. Not a big deal and I am actually very happy I didn't. Reading over it now makes me realize just how much I have grown in my writing. I mean don't get me wrong every writer has a starting point, and that was mine. Also I realize that my writing is going to grow even further over the years. There is always room for improvement, right? Anyways, so I have decided to rewrite the story. Not a massive over haul, but make it better and not so amateur. In this I have learned it is so much easier to rewrite then to write. I know it sounds horrible, but it's nice to know the thought, characters, story, and everything else is already there you just need to improve it. So to show the difference I have decided to share a before and after. Granted I am not the best writer on this planet, and I hope you aren't expecting that. In that thought here are examples.
Before:
The stone floor was cold and lightly damp as Alyce’s feet touched it. Her eyes peered into the blackness of her room as she reached for the small lamp that sat on the nightstand next to her bed, pushing and knocking things out of the way as she turned it on.
After:
The floor was cold as it pressed lightly against Alyce’s feet, her hands felt around softly in an attempt to find the lamp on the table next to her bed. Her thin fingers knocked several things over before she found the little button on the small lamp and the room swiftly filled with a warm dull light that hurt compared to the darkness she had been staring into just moments before.
Now granted there isn't much difference between the two, but there is just enough to take from high school writing and more professional writing. Of course none of my writing is professional, but hopefully over the next year we can change that right. Anyways until next time.
So my name is Jessica, I am an inspiring writer who is currently working a dead end job. I have a beautiful son named Erik. He is the light of my life and the one and only good thing I got out of my marriage. When I was 19 and fresh out of high school, still young and stupid, I got married to who I thought was the love of my life. It was huge mistake on my part. My fears of being the crazy cat woman took over and I took the first guy I could get. 3 long years and many lies later I finally booted his butt out the door. So now a year and about 3 months later I finally have my life back on track, getting ready to go back to school, and hopefully starting a new job. I have been writing since Elementary School and have high hopes of getting my first book published over the next year. If you are willing to stick around that long you can hear the struggles of doing so as well as what it is like to be a 22 year old mom of one with high goals and large hopes.
